Sundae-gukbap — Korean pork and blood-sausage soup piled with meat, Nongmin Baekam Sundae Seoul
Sundae-gukbap (pork & blood-sausage soup). The broth is deep yet clean, and the teuk (special, ₩13,000) comes piled with a generous amount of pork.

I work on a hotel facilities team in this neighborhood, and we don’t do tourist traps. When the day turns cold, we walk to this old sundae-gukbap house off Namdaemun-ro — a Korean pork and blood-sausage soup that locals rank among Seoul’s best.

First time?

Order the gukbap, or the teuk (₩13,000) if you want extra meat. It’s one complete bowl — rice already in.

With drinks?

The sulguk (sharing soup) or a sundae / suyuk platter is the move for a table with soju or makgeolli.

The soup arrives clean and clear. Stir in the perilla powder for a nuttier, deeper bowl (see the tip below).

The Sides

Don’t Skip the Kkakdugi

Free side dishes: kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), green chili, chives and seasoning. The kkakdugi here is on the sweeter side — it plays beautifully against the savory soup.

First-timer Guide

How to Order

  1. Seat yourself — no host. Just take any open table.
  2. Call the staff to order — eye contact and a raised hand, or “Yeogiyo!” (여기요, “over here”).
  3. Water and side dishes are self-serve and refillable. Kkakdugi and chili come free with your meal.
  4. Pay at the counter on your way out. Cards are fine. No tipping — ever, anywhere in Korea.
Good to know Lunch fills up 12:00–13:00 on weekdays. The perilla powder and cheongyang chili sit on the table — they’re how regulars finish the bowl.

I keep hotels in this neighborhood running for a living, and this is where I actually eat. Staying at UH Suite Square, Lotte Hotel Seoul, L7 Myeongdong or the Westin Josun? It’s an easy lunch walk from any of them.
